According to Google, Bridge is helping indie stores beat big box stores in the gift registry SEO race. In a study of searches by state, Bridge ranked above Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Dillards in Google's results.

Bridge conducted this study by using Google 'Incognito Mode' to search for:
South Carolina Gift Registry
Alabama Gift Registry
Georgia Gift Registry

In the attached Google results screenshot, I’ve highlighted Bridge's stores in green, Target in orange, Dillard's in purple, and Bed ... ...

“If the shoe fits, wear it,” goes the old saying, and today’s Times shares the state of indie shoes which may sound familiar to indie gift shop owners. This story seems to be ‘a fit’ for our industry, too.

I recently visited a Footlocker and noticed they had moved the Nike shoes to the back of the store. Why? Nike, with all of its stores and direct to consumer website promotion, is now a competitor and Footlocker is trying to reduce its reliance on Nike. To that affect, I went to the Nike ... ...

Pictures and social media can be a dangerous combo: they breed competition, jealousy, and insecurity. ‘Likes,’ view counts, and comments by peers and strangers propel a bizarre world of masked perfection and underlying anxiety. This isn’t unique to honeymoon posts—it’s happening to teens, single adults, and even business owners that share via social media.

Business lunch: how retail is changing :)

Old retail is 80% analog. This consists of: the physical store, staff, customer service training, etc. What you’d expect walking into a Saks or Macy's. And it's about 20% tech: computers, cash registers (POS systems), mobile shopping, Google ranking, apps, hiring social influencers, Instagram, etc.

Today, the retailers that are well positioned, growing, and 'hot' carry the opposite equation: they're 20% analog and 80% tech.

The retail equation flipped ... ...

Zola is offering free shipping on all items. Are you offering free shipping on all items?
If not, you're going to lose business to them. I advise you to offer free shipping and make less margin on the order vs lose the entire order to Zola.

In general, margins are smaller on online orders. This is well documented--and now accepted--as a business practice. Accept this fact and you'll survive and grow. Don't accept it and you'll lose orders and struggle online and likely fail.

This is our third ... ...

Online sales account for 27% or Lululemon’s sales, reports today’s WSJ. Considering that these are clothes, that’s a lot. There was a day not too long ago when people said shoppers wouldn’t buy significant amounts of clothes online. 27% and growing shows that they were wrong.

And that 27% is very profitable. The brand didn’t have to pay expensive rent in, for example, Manhattan to process those orders.

Target just announced it's offering same day delivery for $9.99 per order, shares today's New York Post.

Last week I wrote about the shipping and selection war going on (post: https://marketplace.bridgecatalog.com/news.cfm?id=18230)

Companies are scrambling to speed up delivery to compete with Amazon even if this means smaller margins. They would rather make less than let Amazon get the sale.

The 2019 retail equation:

Quick (Often Free) Shipping + Massive Online Selection = Retail in 2019

Last week ... ...

Nacho Analytics shows us that search engineers are helping Amazon get 600% more in sales than competitors.

Take away: investing in good search results costs money, but it's well worth it. If you have better search, you sell more.

What is a search relevance engineer? It's a technical person that helps ensure that what you search for you get. E.g.: if you're on a website and you search for "bat," do you get the sports instrument or the animal? Constantly honing and improving the search code creates... ...
